Northgate, for the arts, the environment and social work
Six thousand four hundred students study thirty minutes north of Riverbend, on a campus built around studios, field sites and clinical placements rather than lecture halls.
The Northgate campus
A campus organised around studio and field work
Northgate opened in 1964 as a second site for the programs that did not fit the Riverbend model. The subjects taught here — architecture, environmental science, education and social work — all need studio space, field access or supervised placement, and the campus was laid out with that in mind.
Two of the eight colleges are based at Northgate: the College of Education & Social Work and the School of Architecture & Environment. Between them they enrol 6,400 of the university's 31,400 students, and they share the Northgate Arts Library, the second largest collection in the university.
Northgate is also where a good deal of the university's field research happens. The river corridor north of the campus is used as a long-running study site by biology and environmental policy students, several of whom are undergraduates.

What Northgate teaches
Architecture and environment
Studio-based professional degrees alongside environmental policy and environmental engineering, with a shared workshop floor and a fabrication lab.
Environmental field science
The river corridor north of campus functions as a permanent teaching site, used by biology and environmental policy students through all four undergraduate years.
Education and social work
Both degrees are placement-led. Students work in schools and community agencies across the Northgate catchment from their second year onward.

The Northgate Arts Library holds the visual collections
The second largest library in the university and the only one built for oversized material — drawings, plans, portfolios and the architecture teaching collection. It is open to students from every campus, including those enrolled through Pathify Online.

Research
An undergraduate on a monarch study in her second semester
Dr. Helen Vasquez runs a long-term monarch butterfly survey on the river corridor, staffed in large part by undergraduates. Priya Raman '27 joined it in her second semester and now handles a share of the count data herself.
